Nyt on yö.
Minä kuljen yksin
tyhjiä katuja.
En tiedä, mihin olen menossa,
hyvä kun tiedän mistä
olen tulossa,
ja ruumiissani
soi tuhat kaunista ja
voimakasta sävelmää,
minun koko menneisyyteni,
ja silmissäni loistavat
tuhannen ihmisen silmät,
silmien takana tuntemattomuus,
tätä naista ei tunne kukaan,
se ei ole vielä täysin syntynytkään,
ei kukaan tiedä
mitä se on tulevaisuudessa.

Necuvintele

El
un om singur

The Hermit’s Song

A hiding tuft, a green-barked yew tree
Is my roof,
While nearby a great oak tree keeps me
Tempest-proof.

I can pick my fruit from an apple
Like an Inn,
Or can fill my fist where hazels
Shut me in.

A clear well beside me offers
Best of drink,
And there glows a bed of cresses
Near its brink.

Pigs and Goats, the friendliest neighbours,
Nestle near,
Wild swine come, or broods of badgers,
Grazing deer.

All the gentry of the county
Come to call!
And the foxes come behind them,
Best of all.

To what meals the woods invite me
All about!
There are water, herbs and cresses,
Salmon, trout.

A clutch of eggs, sweet mast and honey
Are my meat,
Heathberries and Whortleberries
For a sweet.

All that one could ask for comfort
Round me grows,
There are hips and haws and strawberries,
Nuts and sloes.

And when summer spreads its mantle
What a sight!
Marjoram and leeks and pignuts,
Juicy, bright.

Dainty redbreasts briskly forage
Every bush
Round and round my hut there flutter
Shallow, thrush.

Bees and beetles, music-makers,
Croon and strum;
Geese pass over, duck in autumn,
Dark streams hum.

Angry wren, officious linnet
And black-cap,
All industrious, and the woodpecker’s
Sturdy tap.

From the sea the gulls and herons
Flutter in,
While in upland heather rises
The grey hen.

In the year’s most brilliant weather
Heifers low
Through green fields, not driven nor beaten,
Tranquil, slow.

In wreathed boughs the wind is whispering,
Skies are blue,
Swans call, river water falling
Is calling too.

Which Garbage Song Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla

Well, it's not my favourite Garbage song (I like Vow, Shut Your Mouth and Push It more). But it's Mihai's favourite song, so that's okay ... :3

The smooth sides of houses

As mentioned in a previous entry, I like the smooth sides of old houses. In Lund, you can see quite a lot of them.

Streets of Lund 2006

Yesterday the weather was wonderful - a clear, freezing cold day with lots of snow all over the place. To the left above is one of the rare streets in Lund that hasn't been made into a lethal death trap for bikers by strewing salt over the snow.

This house - seeming to be a rundown student's dorm - is one of my favourite houses in Lund. I made some more pictures of it last october.

I wonder who lives up here. It has to be one of the coolest apartments in town.

A fuzzy eurasian dog. I could just barely resist cuddling it to death (*my* death, that is).

Above and below are houses from the former slum quarter.

The International Institute of Environmental Economics. Behind the lit window, Mihai is working hard.

The neighbouring roof.

The view from Mihai's office.

The clouds rising from the south look like hills.

A cross on the cathedral of Lund, also photographed from Mihai's window.

"Tågtrafiken är helt CP"

"The train traffic is completely ill with cerebral paresis", a young man on the bus to Kävlinge said today to a friend he was talking to on his mobile phone.

The 'snowstorm' (i.e. normal weather for more northern or continental parts of the world, but total chaos for Skåne) caused a total standstill on all train traffic south of Höör and Ängelholm. According to Skånetrafiken's website, it's because the contact wires are covered with ice.
Well, I wonder how they manage that kind of issues in, say, Lapland, Canada or Siberia.

Thus, masses of people spent several hours by the railway station in Lund this afternoon, trying to get on one of the overfull buses. I was one of them, and at that point I just couldn't understand why the hell I have to live in Kävlinge.

I just recalled the engine driver on the freight train that took us from Kiruna to Abisko a year ago. He told us about how he had been working for a while in Skåne, but at some point he couldn't take it anymore and had to go back to Lapland ...

Maybe I'll do the same. People keep telling me that the Barents region is full of opportunities, not least for someone like me who speaks Swedish, Finnish and Russian.

MSU obviously has had a fundamental impact on my subconscious.

My dream last night started out as some kind of "moving" dream, in the sense that me and Mihai were still officially living in the same apartment, but I had moved most of my stuff here to Kävlinge, and he had moved most of his stuff to the house he's sharing with a couple of colleagues in Lund. As it happened, I had just found a small, cheap apartment in a house in Lund, which was next to the big house where we had our apartment together (and that house was *really* big – it resembled Moscow State University much more than the actual house where we used to live together). I was going to move into that apartment in Lund, and I was just going to say that it was great that it was right next to Mihai's place, until I remembered that he was moving to that house with his colleagues, which was quite far away.

Anyway, it went on like that for a while, until I at one point was returning home to the apartment in the gigantic house late in the evening. There was some kind of commotion there, and people wouldn't let me into the building. Some said there was a fire drill going on, others said it was a *real* fire, while yet others said there was some kind of leak of toxic substances. My first terrified thought was, "Aaah! My comics originals!!!", but then I remembered that I had already brought all my comics to my apartment in Kävlinge. After a moment, another terrified thought hit me: "Aaah! Mihai!!!!"

I fought myself through the crowds that had gathered, and went searching for an entrance where no one would hinder me. Finally, after climbing the very high steps up to the second level of the building (which were kind of like the steps up to the Lund City Library, but about 25 m high), I found an unguarded door and slipped inside. There was smoke in some corridors, and people were screaming, so there really seemed to be something going on … However, since I had entered the building through a door I had never used before, I had difficulties finding my way to the wing where our apartment was (I still remeber clearly that its number was 722). I ran through endless corridors, climbed stairs, drew short cuts through other people's apartments – in one, I found Donald Rumsfeld and his henchmen, in another, I found the BBC team, in a third I found an artist, who with her assistants refused to leave the building, because she was in the middle of creating art, and in a fourth I found mum's friend Kent-Hugo's dogs (only the grown up dogs – the puppies have already been picked up by their new owners) - I climbed in through the window from a terrace, and I opened the door to the closest stairwell for the dogs so they could get out. But no matter what, I couldn't find the stairwell where our apartment was!!!

When my alarm clock woke me up, I was frustrated and still afraid that something might have happened to Mihai. I was angry that I didn't have my mobile phone with me in the dream, so that I could have simply called him to ask where he was. And I insisted on going back to sleep, because maybe I would eventually find him if the dream continued …

The dream did continue, but I should have known better – this was the kind of dream where the whole *point* was that I never found him before I woke up again.

One method for making the comics section of Lund City Library better

Yesterday, I donated all six issues of Tunguska to Lund City Library. I had been regretting that I didn't donate *all* of my comic books to the Gothenburg city library (I hardly think they'll want to give me money for the other issues), and I had also been damning the library in Lund for having such a small selection of comics.

So, I made it a bit better myself ... They should be available for loan sometime soon. (Or so I hope.)

Anyway, if I had a stable income that would support me without problem, from a job that would leave me plenty of time for drawing comics (even free weekends without homework or such), I'd gladly give all my fanzines away for free. However, that is not the case, so I constantly have to keep some kind of balance between sustainability and charity.

I'm no good as a salesman - I feel embarrassed trying to sell things, and I feel like I'm cheating people, making them think they need things they don't need at all. (Well, I guess I should just face that that's what selling is really about ...)

Hungry for hills

On my way back from mum's place, I stopped by in Gothenburg to sell some of my comic books to the local comic book shop Dolores (Södra Allégatan 2B) and visit the wonderful city library (which has an excellent comics section - now even more excellent, since I donated Tunguska issue #0 to the library). I also went for a walk, during which I just had to climb all of the about 200 steps up to the fortlet Kronan (the crown). Unfortunately, its museum was closed.

There is another fortlet in Gothenburg, near the railway station, which is called The Lion. It has a gilded lion on top of it.

The view from the hill was quite nice. You could see most of Gothenburg, including one of the coolest student dorms in Sweden - the Johanneberg water tower.

The fortlet was built in 1687 to defend Gothenburg against those nasty Danes.

"Asphalt Mirrors" is going to be translated into Italian

The first story about Eva, "Asphalt Mirrors", is going to be published in English and Italian on the website eravamotreamicialpub.it. The Italian translation will be available soon, but the English version and an introduction in Italian are there already.

Some of the other things on that website might be interesting, too, such as the Soviet fetishism. Or maybe not, such as the abundance in certain sections of lightly dressed women. Anyway, "Asphalt Mirrors" is the first comic published there, and it seems to fit in quite well (it has both some Russian elements and some lightly dressed and well-endowed women in it).

2006 ...

I made a new year's card with pictures from the second visit we made to the furry puppies of mum's acquaintance. This time, they were bigger and wilder, and their teeth were itching badly ...

Another way of celebrating the new year was by building a snow Mitsu. Here, Ainur is brushing off some snow from it.

See the snow Mitsu at night with the lantern lit, and read more about the Japanese tradition of building snow dogs at Ainur's blog.

We also made a snow Mitsu two years ago. You can see it at Mitsu's own website.

As always, the real Mitsu has lots of fun destroying the heathen idol. But this one is built quite sturdy, so it takes a bigger effort than last time ...
